When I started working on Wild Rhubarb + Buck I did some Soul Searching asking myself what I wanted to accomplish with this new idea. I really wanted to share something with the world that was truly my own. I am passionate about telling a story with food. I want people to take a bite and be transported by the flavors to a time when there was more care with food. I remember inviting a friend over and all we did was played all day. It was an era where people really believed in taking the time to connect with each other. When after Sunday dinner we would walk in the garden with our guests and spend hours visiting after sharing delicious home cooked meals together. Meals were prepared with Love and Care and Ingredients that we grew ourselves. Pickles, Jam and Sauerkraut from the “cold room”, potatoes, carrots and onions from the “root cellar”, fresh buns that were baked that morning. Eggs that came from our chickens and Beef and pork that came from our own pastures and barns. I want to share this experience with the World. I want people to have access to insanely delicious and fresh food. I’m calling it Prairie Comfort Food. At Wild…. I want you to catch a hint of that time. Our world has changed and runs at a pace much faster than it did and with it, we are moving faster as well, but if you have a moment, take the time to stop by and smile with us. Take a moment to taste something worth tasting, to indulge in a slice of pie just because, to pop open a Jar of pickled Carrots and experience the flavor of fresh dill and local ingredients preserved in the old way. And most importantly take the time to smile at a stranger. Together we can remind each other of the good things in life, the things that give our lives JOY and make our existence an experience worth living.
We work closely with the Beiseker Hutterite Colony. Paul and Katrina and their family manage the colonies garden. We also partner with Shirley’s Greenhouse and Many other local suppliers. We try to use as many local vegetables and products as is possible. We try our best to be transparent about where our products come from and how they are grown. Our preserving and baking is done in our kitchen in Linden, Alberta and is shipped Fresh daily to Calgary. This allows us to support a small town economy and stay in touch with the farming community. We are developing new recipes that are healthier and experimenting with natural sugars to ensure all of our products are contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
